For the most part, AI assistants cannot cite what they cannot read, and a hard paywall or login wall blocks the crawlers they rely on just as it blocks any other visitor. Content locked behind a required account, a hard paywall, or an interstitial a crawler cannot pass is usually invisible at retrieval time, so the facts you want quoted never reach the model. Soft or metered paywalls are murkier — some let a crawler see the full text while showing humans a gate, some do not — and a few large publishers have struck licensing deals that feed their content to specific assistants directly, but none of that applies to an ordinary business site. The practical rule for anyone who wants to be cited is the opposite of exclusivity: put the facts, answers and specifics you want an assistant to repeat in publicly crawlable HTML, not behind a gate, a login, or heavy scripting. Gate your premium product if you must, but keep the content that establishes who you are and what you do fully open.
