Do NAP citations help your AI visibility?

NAP consistency — your name, address and phone number matching exactly everywhere they appear — is quiet, foundational work that pays off disproportionately in AI answers. Assistants are trying to resolve a question to one verifiable local entity, and conflicting details across directories are exactly the kind of noise that makes a model hesitate or pick a competitor whose data lines up. Consistent citations across the directories models trust reinforce a single, confident entity; mismatched hours, old addresses or three versions of your name quietly erode it. This isn't persuasion — it's making sure the machine can trust that all these mentions are the same business.

FAQ

Why does a small inconsistency matter so much?Because the model is doing entity resolution, and conflicting facts create doubt. If one directory lists an old address and another a slightly different business name, the assistant can't be sure these refer to the same place — and in a close call it reaches for the business whose details are unambiguous. Clean, identical citations remove that doubt.

Which citations should I prioritize?Start with the sources that carry the most trust for your category — your Google Business Profile and the major directories and review sites buyers actually use in your industry — and make every detail there match your website exactly. Breadth helps, but consistency across the trusted few matters more than presence on dozens of low-quality lists.
