Canonical tags are a quiet but real AI-visibility hygiene factor because they tell crawlers which version of a page is authoritative when the same content is reachable at several URLs — with or without trailing slashes, tracking parameters, print versions, or across http and https. When AI crawlers hit duplicate or near-duplicate pages, a correct canonical consolidates the signals onto one URL, so the authority, links and freshness that should accrue to your real page aren't scattered across ghosts. Get it wrong — canonical pointing to the wrong page, or every page canonicalizing to the homepage — and you can actively hide your best content from the models you're trying to reach. The value isn't glamorous: canonicalization won't make AI recommend you on its own, but it ensures that all the other work you do lands on a single, clear, quotable URL instead of being diluted across duplicates.
