Will AI search replace Google for local business?

Not replace — reshape. Google is not disappearing, but the way people find local businesses is splitting: some buyers still scroll the map pack, while a fast-growing share now asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a recommendation and act on the one or two names they hear back. Google itself is becoming AI-first with AI Overviews and AI Mode on top of the same local index. The real change is that answers are getting shorter and more decisive — fewer options, named with confidence — which raises the stakes of being the business that gets named. The winners are not betting on one channel; they are making sure the same strong local signals work whether the answer comes from a map, an overview, or a chatbot.
